Why not?
We don’t like being told what not to do. We have been told “no” many times, but there is no greater consequence than when we ignore what God told us in Genesis 2.
but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die. – Genesis 2:17
This act was more than simply disobedience. This violation represented the rejection of man towards his creator: it was an open rebellion. It was like we were saying to God: “You have given me everything, but I no longer want to depend on you. From now on I want to live guided by my own wisdom.”
The serpent clearly understood what was at stake: trying to supplant God.
But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” – Genesis 3: 4-5
This is the greater of all deceptions. Who can be like God? We can pretend to be like God, but it will never be more than pretension.
Every time we reject the wisdom of God we eat again the fruit that caused our eviction from Eden. Only God knows what is best for His creation. Only God can give us access to the tree of life.
It is a good thing that in his love God has given us, through his son Jesus Christ, the opportunity to return to the state of perfection for which we were created!
I have learned that doing my own will only brings momentary satisfaction. However, when I submit to the will of God, even if I don’t like it or don’t understand it, it will always result in the best outcome.
Don’t be fooled. A “no” from God is the best thing that can happen to us.
